Integument and its Derivatives in Vertebrates
- Comparative anatomy studies animal structures, focusing on how different groups are similar or different, and their evolutionary origins.
- Integument, or skin, is the outermost protective layer of an animal's body. It includes conjunctiva, external eardrums, and mucous membranes of the mouth, rectum, nostrils, eyelids, and the urinogenital ducts.
- Integument has several functions, including protection from the environment
- Protection: The integument separates an animal from its external environment, shielding it from injury, chemicals, and disease. Specialized structures like scales, feathers, and hairs also reduce injury and keep moisture in.
- Locomotion: Skin structures like dermal fin rays in fish, and webbed feet in amphibians aid in movement in water. Adaptations like claws and feathers support climbing or flying.
- Secretion: Skin glands produce various substances—mucous for keeping skin moist, poisons to deter predators, oils to condition feathers or fur, and milk for nourishment.
- Sensation: Nerve endings in the skin provide information about touch, temperature, pain, and pressure. This sensory input is crucial for survival.
- Sexual Selection: Bright colors or other elaborate structures attract mates. This can include antlers, plumage, or skin coloration.
- Temperature Regulation: Integumentary blood vessels dilate to release heat or constrict to retain heat. Feathers and fur provide insulation.
- Excretion: Skin plays a role in eliminating waste products, especially in water-based animals. Sweat in mammals is an example of this.
- Food Storage: Blubber and subcutaneous fat act as insulation and a stored food source.
Epidermal Derivatives
- Epidermal structures are derived from the epidermis (outer layer) of skin.
- Exoskeletons such as scales, beaks, claws, nails, hooves, feathers, and hairs originate from the epidermis and protect the body of the animal.
- Various glands, like mucous, poison, uropygial, sweat, sebaceous, scent, and mammary glands, are also epidermal derivatives.
Dermal Derivatives
- Dermal derivatives originate in the dermis (inner layer) of skin.
- Examples include bony scales (e.g., in fishes, crocodiles), dermal plates or scutes (terrestrial vertebrates) including fin rays in fishes forming the endoskeleton.
Types Of Scales
- Cosmoid scales: From extinct lobe-finned fishes
- Placoid scales: Sharks and rays
- Ganoid scales: From ganoid fishes
- Cycloid scales: From teleost fishes
- Ctenoid scales: From teleost fishes
- Dermal scales: Found in reptiles and some amphibians
