Study Notes
Lean Enterprise
- A lean enterprise emphasizes the prevention of waste throughout the organization
- Waste is defined as any extra time, labor, capital, space, facilities, or material that does not add value to the product or service for the customer
Signals and Kaizen
- Signals are used to alert people about problems
- Kaizen encourages the continual activity of small process improvements by operators
- Kaizen Blitz is a highly focused action-oriented 3-5 day improvement workshop by a multifunction team to improve a specific process
Value Stream
- A value stream is the specific flow of activities required to design, order, produce, and deliver a product or service to customer(s)
- There may be more than one value stream in an organization
- Ideally, it will only include value-added activities
Value Stream Map (VSM)
- VSM graphically describes the sequence and movement of activities
- First, develop a current state map, then an ideal state map with only added activities
- The difference between the two provides opportunities for improvement
Theory of Constraints (TOC)
- TOC states that one operation limits the throughput of the system at any one time
- Improving this operation will improve the entire system's efficiency
Historical Review of Lean
- Adam Smith - Division of Labour theory
- Eli Whitney - Standard parts
- Gilbreth - Process map and motion efficiency
- Taylor - Principals of scientific management
- Ford Motor Company - Speed and flow (1920)
- Toyota Production System - Flexibility and complexity management
- Deming Concept - Quality @ Source
- Womack and Jones - Lean fundamentals (1990)
Lean Fundamentals
- Types of waste: non-value added and unnecessary, necessary but non-value added, variation, and overstressing
- Categories of waste: overproduction, waiting, transportation, defects, inventory, motion, and extra processing
- Workplace Organization - 5 S's: sort, straighten, shine, standardize, and sustain
- Concept of Flow: continuous with a minimum of variation, reduces time between order and delivery
- Inventory Control: JIT, Kanban, and Takt time
- Visual Management: visual displays to inform people about customers, projects, performance, goals, etc.
