    Study Notes

Life processes are essential functions of living organisms that help them survive and grow. One such life process is nutrition, which involves taking food into our bodies so we can get energy from it, build cells for growth, repair damage, and replace worn out parts. Food contains many different types of substances called nutrients, including carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, fiber, and water. Our body uses these nutrients to keep us healthy. For example, carbohydrates give us energy; protein helps make new cells; fat provides heat when we're cold; vitamins protect against disease; and minerals like iron carry oxygen around our bloodstream. Water keeps everything hydrated and moving properly inside our body. Each day, people need different amounts of each type of nutrient to stay healthy. People eat different kinds of foods because their bodies need all sorts of nutrients.

There is another aspect of nutrition: how healthy our food choices are. This includes eating enough calories every day, getting plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy products, lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, and nuts, and staying away from junk foods high in sugar, salt, saturated fat, trans fat, and cholesterol. Eating well means choosing the right types of foods, eating moderate portions, and trying to avoid too much unhealthy food.

One thing to remember about nutrition is that its main goal isn't just to feed ourselves, but also to teach us how to choose healthier ways of eating. Nutritious diets don't necessarily have to be complicated or expensive — they just require making good choices about what you put in your mouth. In summary, nutrition plays a key role in keeping our bodies functioning properly, providing the fuel our bodies need to work efficiently, helping prevent diseases and conditions, and enabling us to maintain optimum health.
