Study Notes
ICF Model
- The ICF model is used to understand health conditions and their impact
- Components include body structures/functions, activity limitations, participation restrictions, contextual factors (environmental & personal), and health conditions
- The model examines the interplay between these elements
Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary Interventions
- Primary Intervention: Aims to prevent injury/illness in a healthy population (e.g., health & wellness programs)
- Secondary Intervention: Addresses early stages of injury or illness (e.g., managing inflammation and restoring movement)
- Tertiary Intervention: Focuses on managing impaired tissues and using assistive technology
Patient-Client Management Model
- The model involves a series of steps: Examination, Evaluation, Diagnosis, Prognosis, Interventions, and Outcomes
- The steps provide a framework for understanding and treating patients
Biopsychosocial Model
- The biopsychosocial model addresses both internal and external sources influencing a patient's situation
- Internal factors include psychological factors like stress and self-perception (e.g., sadness)
- External factors include external events, environment and social interactions (e.g., bullying, interpersonal relationships, work situations)
- These factors impact a patient in a biological, psychological and social context
Review of Systems
- Review of systems (done in a history) screens for red flags and non-musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions
- Systems review is a brief objective hands-on screen of cardiopulmonary, integumentary, MSK, and neurologic systems
- This helps determine patient safety and guides further reasoning
Patient-First Language
- Language that prioritizes the individual, i.e., a person with a disability instead of disabled person
- Avoid using language that suggests disability as a defining characteristic.
Active Listening
- Steps to active listening
- Receiving (hearing and attending)
- Understanding (content and questioning)
- Evaluating
- Remembering
- Responding (verbal or nonverbal)
Review of Systems (History component) vs. Systems Review (Objective assessment)
- Review of systems in the history part of patient examination
- Systems Review is an objective assessment of the patient's condition.
Medical Terminology vs. Layperson Language
- Edema means swelling. Important to understand the medical terms in relation to layperson language.
