Study Notes
Male Reproductive System
- Testes: Males have two testes located in the scrotum, which is a sac of skin outside the pelvic cavity.
- Sperm Duct: Thin tubes arising from the testes.
- Prostate Gland: An accessory gland in males. It releases secretions into the sperm duct, along with seminal fluid from the testes. These secretions flow into the penis.
- Urethra: Acts as a common pathway for both seminal fluid and urine in males. The male urethra is longer than the female urethra.
- Penis: An external organ that expels both urine and semen.
Female Reproductive System
- Ovaries: The source of the female gamete (egg). Each month, an ovary releases an egg. This process is known as ovulation.
- Fallopian Tubes (Oviducts): Tubes connecting the ovaries to the uterus. They carry the egg from the ovary to the uterus, where fertilization may occur.
- Uterus (Womb): A muscular organ in the pelvic cavity, crucial during menstruation, fertilization and fetal development.
- Cervix: A circular muscle ring at the lower end of the uterus. It dilates during childbirth.
- Vagina: A muscular tube connecting the cervix to the outside of the female body. It is the pathway for sperm to enter and the birth canal.
Recall - Male Conditions
- Epididymitis: The inflammation of the epididymis.
- Erectile Dysfunction: The inability to get and keep an erection.
- Balanitis: Inflammation of the head of the penis.
Recall - Female Conditions
- Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS): A life-threatening condition caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
- Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS): A condition associated with infertility, characterized by the presence of numerous cysts (fluid-filled sacs) on the ovaries.
Reproduction
- Reproduction: The process by which organisms create new organisms like themselves. While essential for species survival, it is not essential for individual survival.
- Human Reproduction: Two types of sex cells, or gametes, are involved: sperm (male) and egg (female). When sperm meets the egg, it forms a zygote, which grows into an embryo and then a fetus.
- Internal Fertilization: Fertilization occurs inside the female body. Humans are viviparous — they give rise to embryos directly, instead of laying eggs.
Menstrual Cycle
- Menstrual Cycle: A complex natural process controlled by female hormones. This process results in regular bleeding (periods) with four phases: menstruation (lining shed), follicular phase (egg development), ovulation (releasing the egg), and luteal phase (preparation for pregnancy).
- Menstruation: The shedding of the uterine lining, typically lasting 3-7 days.
- Follicular Phase: Development of follicles (egg-containing sacs) on the ovary and thickening of the uterine lining.
- Ovulation: Release of a mature egg from an ovary. Pregnancy is most likely during the days leading up to and including ovulation.
- Luteal Phase: The period after ovulation when the uterine lining continues to thicken in preparation for the fertilized egg. If pregnancy does not occur, the uterine lining sheds.
