Male Reproductive System Structure and Function
-
Testicle (x2):
- Produces sperm and male hormone testosterone.
- Lies next to the epididymis.
- Shuttles sperm to vas deferens.
-
Epididymis (x2):
- Lies next to testicles.
- Carries sperm from epididymis to urethra.
- Carries both semen and urine.
-
Vas Deferens (x2):
- Sac that holds the testicles.
- Has the ability to expand and contract.
- Produces a liquid that nourishes the sperm.
-
Seminal Vesicle (x2):
- Also nourishes the sperm.
- (sperm + nourishment = semen)
- Consists of 2 parts: short—long (main part)
-
Prostate Gland (x1):
- Releases semen from kidney.
-
Penis (x1):
- Stores urine from kidneys.
- Consists of 2 parts: shaft (main part) and head.
- At the end of the glands is a small slit or opening where semen exits the body.
-
Urethra (x1):
- Channel that carries semen (in fluid called semen) and exits the body.
- Also part of the urinary system.
-
Scrotum (x1):
- Sac that holds testicles in place.
Male Reproductive System Details
- The male reproductive organs, or genitals, are both inside and outside the pelvis.
- The testicles are also part of the endocrine system, because they make testosterone, a hormone that causes boys to develop deeper voices, bigger muscles, and body hair. Also stimulates the production of sperm, which is transported through the epididymis and vas deferens.
- In a guy who has reached sexual maturity, the two oval-shaped testicles, or testes, make and store millions of tiny sperm cells.
