Study Notes
Long Bones
- Clavicle: Connects the arm to the body, acts as a strut; important for shoulder stability.
- Humerus: Largest bone in the upper arm; facilitates movement of the shoulder and elbow.
- Radius: One of the two bones in the forearm; allows rotation of the wrist.
- Ulna: Parallel to the radius, it supports the medial aspect of the forearm.
- Metacarpals: The five bones in the palm of the hand; contribute to the structure of the hand.
- Phalanges of hand: Bones of the fingers; each finger has three phalanges, except the thumb which has two.
- Femur: Longest bone in the body; supports the weight of the body and is crucial for leg movement.
- Tibia: The larger of the two bones in the lower leg; also known as the shinbone.
- Fibula: The thinner bone next to the tibia; provides stability to the ankle.
- Metatarsals: Five long bones in the foot; form the arch and support body weight during movement.
- Phalanges of toes: Bones of the toes; similar structure to the fingers, aiding balance and mobility.
Short Bones
- Carpals: Eight small bones in the wrist; facilitate wrist movement and flexibility.
- Tarsals: Seven bones in the ankle; play a crucial role in balance and mobility.
- Patella: The kneecap; protects the knee joint and improves leverage for leg movements.
Flat Bones
- Most Bones of the Skull: Includes the occipital, parietal, frontal, nasal, lacrimal, and vomer bones; protect the brain and provide attachment points for muscles.
- Ribs: 12 pairs of curved bones protecting the thoracic cavity; essential for respiration.
- Pelvis Bones: Comprises ilium, ischium, and pubis; supports the weight of the upper body and protects pelvic organs.
- Scapula: Shoulder blade; allows for the attachment of the arm and aids in shoulder motion.
- Sternum: Breastbone; connects the ribs and protects the heart and lungs.
Irregular Bones
- Vertebra: The individual bones of the spine; protect the spinal cord and provide structural support.
- Sacrum: A triangular bone at the base of the spine; connects the spine to the pelvis.
- Some Bones of Skull: Include cranial bones (sphenoid, ethmoid) and facial bones (mandible, maxilla, etc.); serve various functions from protection to forming facial structure.
