Flashcards

Hormone regulation in reproduction

Hormonal interactions between the hypothalamus, anterior pituitary, and gonads regulate the production of gametes and sex hormones.

HPG axis

The relationship between the hypothalamus, anterior pituitary, and gonads.

GnRH

Gonadotropin-releasing hormone; released from the hypothalamus.

LH and FSH

Lutenizing hormone and follicle stimulating hormone; released from the anterior pituitary.

Study Notes

Hormone Secretion

  • In both males and females, hormonal interactions between the hypothalamus, anterior pituitary, and gonads regulate the production of gametes and sex hormones
  • The relationship between these components is called the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis

HPG Axis

  • Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) is released from the hypothalamus
  • Luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) are released from the anterior pituitary
  • Sex hormones are released from the gonads
  • Inhibin released from the gonads creates a negative feedback loop to inhibit the HPG axis

Development of the Male Reproductive System

  • Prenatal secretion of testosterone is needed
  • The fetus has relatively high testosterone levels for a few months
  • Testosterone levels are very low until puberty

What is Testosterone?

  • Testosterone is a steroid hormone made from cholesterol
  • Once puberty begins, testosterone influences spermatogenesis, and the growth of ducts, glands, and the penis
  • Testosterone is also involved in secondary sex characteristics
  • These include the deepening of the voice via changes to the larynx
  • Pubic, axillary, and facial hair
  • Hair growth on the chest and other body areas
  • Thicker, oilier skin, which can increase acne
  • Increased size and density of bones
  • Increased size and mass of skeletal muscles
  • Testosterone boosts basal metabolic rate and drives male sex drive
