- Cross-Court Attack: A diagonally-directed attack.
- Cut Shot: A steeply angled spike from the hitter's dominant side.
- Digging: Passing a rapidly hit ball close to the ground.
- Dink: A one-handed, soft hit played close to the ground.
- Double Block: Two players working together to intercept a ball at the net.
- Double Hit: Violation. Two successive hits by the same player.
- Down Ball: A type of attack.
- Dump: Usually performed by the setter.
- Five-One (5-1): Offensive system involving five hitters and one setter.
- Floater: A serve with no spin resulting in an erratic ball path.
- Follow/Forearm Pass/Bump Pass: To move with and block or to receive the ball (also known as bump or dig).
- Four-Two (4-2): Offensive system involving four hitters and two setters.
- Free Ball: To return the ball to the opponent without intending to score.
- Front: Blocker's position relative to the attacker.
- Front Row: Play area in front of the attack line.
- Game Plan: Offensive and defensive strategy for an opponent.
- Held Ball: A ball that rests during contact, resulting in a violation.
- Hit: One of the six fundamental skills.
- Hitter/Hitting Percentage: An offensive player/statistic derived from total kills minus total attack errors.
- Joust: Two opposing players contacting the ball simultaneously above the net.
- Jump Serve: Serving with an approach, toss, and a jump.
- Kill: A successful attack leading directly to a point or side out.
- Libero: A defensive-specialized player.
- Lines: Court boundaries.
- Linesman: Officials positioned at court corners.
- Lineup: Starting player rotation and serving order.
- Line Serve: A straight-ahead serve directed near the opponent's sideline.
- Line Shot: Spike played along an opponent's sideline, near the hitter.
- Load: Optimal body position for blocking.
- Middle Back/Middle Blocker: Defensive player in the middle back row to cover deep spikes.
- Middle Up: Defensive system using the middle back player to cover short shots.
- Mintonette: The original name for volleyball.
- Off-Blocker: Outside blocker not part of a double-block.
- Off-Speed Shots: Intentionally slow attacks.
- Opposite: Player positioned opposite the setter.
- Outside Hitter: Usually plays at the ends of the net in the front row.
- Overhand Pass: Controlled pass using open hands and fingers, with the face below the ball.
- Overhand Serve: Serving the ball with an overhand motion from above the shoulder.
- Overlap: Violation when a team is lined up out of rotation during serve.
- Overpass: A ball passed across the net.
- Overset: An errant set that crosses the net without any offensive contact.
- Pass: One of six fundamental skills (first contact with the ball).
- Pancake: One-hand floor defensive technique.
- Party Ball: Ball passed across the net in front of the attack line for an immediate front-row attack.
- Perimeter: Backcourt defense strategy where players position near court boundaries.
- Pipe: Back-row attack from the court's middle.

- Quick Set: A very shallow set used to counter blocks.
