- Introduced in England in 1870 for the Royal Family
- Played similarly to tennis in England
- Brought to Canada (near the US border) and eventually arrived in America in 1929
- Became an Olympic sport in 1992
Characteristics of Badminton
- Shuttlecock can reach speeds of up to 100mph
- Also known as Poona, and is a national sport in India and Malaysia
- Introduced in the Philippines in 1997
Safety and Etiquette
- Maintain a firm grip on the racket
- Be cautious with your partner and stay in your own court
- Stop playing if another player enters your court
- Wait until the game is stopped to retrieve a shuttlecock
- Be aware of walls and net boundaries
- Agree on court boundaries and the first server before playing
- Call your own faults and replay points if in doubt
- Shake hands after the game
