Study Notes
Histology of the Cell
- Histology is the microscopic study of body tissues using light or electronic microscopes.
- The cell is the smallest living unit in the body and consists of a cell membrane, cytoplasm, and organelles.
- The cell can be compared to a small city with factories, boundaries, and industries that make it almost self-sufficient.
Body Components
- The body consists of cells, muscle fibers, nerve cells, epithelial cells, bone cells, fibroblasts, erythrocytes, macrophages, and sperm.
- Tissues are collections of similar cells, including epithelium, nervous tissue, muscle, cartilage, bone, connective tissue, and blood.
Organ and System
- An organ is an independent body part formed from tissues, such as skin, brain, heart, and liver.
- A system is a group of organs functioning together, including the central nervous system, respiratory system, immune system, and cardiovascular system.
Types of Cells
- Prokaryotes are cells that lack a nucleus or membrane-bound organelles, such as bacteria.
- Eukaryotes are cells that have a nucleus and membrane-bound organelles, like plant and animal cells.
Cell Division and Interaction
- Each cell undergoes cell division to reproduce and replace dead cells.
- Cell interaction with the extracellular environment involves active transport of material from a vesicle within the cell to the extracellular environment (exocytosis) and the uptake of material from outside the cell to inside (endocytosis).
Cell Membrane and Organelles
- The cell membrane is the cell's outer layer, involved in many functions, including intercellular junctions, and contains many organelles, including vacuoles.
- Organelles are metabolically active specialized structures, including the nucleus, mitochondria, ribosomes, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi bodies, and lysosomes.
Cell Anatomy
- Cell division, or mitosis, is a complex process involving many organelles that occurs during growth or regeneration.
- Extracellular materials, such as interstitial fluid, surround each cell in a tissue, and are important for dissolving, mixing, and transporting substances.
Epithelium Properties
- Epithelium is the tissue that covers and lines both the external and internal body surfaces, including vessels and small cavities.
- Epithelial cells undergo cellular differentiation as they move from the deeper germinal layers to the surface of the tissue to be shed or lost.
