• Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS) is characterized by a combination of hemolytic anemia, acute kidney failure (uremia), and low platelet count (thrombocytopenia).

Assessment Findings

• Pallor may be observed due to anemia resulting from the destruction of red blood cells.
• Hypertension can occur as a result of kidney dysfunction and fluid retention.
• Jaundice may be present due to the increased breakdown of red blood cells, leading to elevated bilirubin levels.
• Edema, or swelling, is often seen due to the kidneys' inability to properly regulate fluid balance.
• Seizures can occur in severe cases due to electrolyte imbalances or central nervous system involvement.

Diagnostic Tests

• Urinalysis (UA) is performed to assess kidney function and detect abnormalities such as protein or blood in the urine.
• Complete Blood Count (CBC) is essential to evaluate the levels of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.
• Reticulocyte count measures the number of new, immature red blood cells in the blood, indicating the bone marrow's response to anemia.
• Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) is a measure of kidney function; elevated levels indicate kidney damage.
• Complete Metabolic Panel (CMP) provides a comprehensive assessment of kidney and liver function, electrolyte balance, and glucose levels.

Interventions

• Blood transfusion may be necessary to address severe anemia by increasing the red blood cell count.
• Hemodialysis might be required in cases of acute kidney failure to remove waste products and excess fluid from the blood.
• Monitoring involves close observation of the patient's vital signs, fluid balance, and neurological status to detect and manage complications.
