Study Notes
Helicopter Landing Zone Operations
- A dedicated apparatus and crew is assigned for the landing zone (LZ).
- The apparatus should be positioned at least 150 feet from the center of the LZ.
- Visual markers like flares, cones, lights, or vehicle headlights should be used to mark the LZ corners.
- A wind direction marker is recommended, but not mandatory.
- FM 1960 Fire Ground 1 is the primary radio channel for communication with the helicopter.
- All hazards must be communicated to the approaching helicopter.
- The helicopter needs to be informed about the expected landing location.
- Personnel should remain outside the LZ perimeter and utilize vehicles as shields from the LZ.
- Eye protection and full protective gear are mandatory for firefighters due to the potential for flying debris and rotor wash.
- Pump operators must be shielded from the rotor wash or remain seated inside the vehicle for quick access to the pump.
- Fire protection must be maintained during the helicopter's arrival, departure, and any time the aircraft engine is running.
- Any hazards identified during landing should be secured before the helicopter departs.
- The same safety precautions for personnel should be maintained during the departure as during the arrival.
- The incident commander or designated contact should inform everyone when the helicopter has landed and departed.
- The LZ should be maintained until the helicopter is out of range in case of an emergency landing.
Landing Zone Considerations
- LZ should be at least 250 feet from the emergency scene.
- The minimum LZ size is 75' by 75' during daylight, increasing to 100' by 100' in darkness, inclement weather, or hazardous conditions.
- The LZ should be level, free of obstacles, and debris.
- A hard surface LZ is preferred over unimproved surfaces for ease of maneuvering.
- A hose line should be readily available but only deployed when necessary. Easily packable lines (booster line, front bumper line) can be considered for LZ surface preparation.
