Helicopter Landing Zone Operations
- An apparatus and crew should be assigned to the landing zone (LZ).
- The apparatus should be parked at least 150 feet from the center of the LZ.
- Corner markers, such as traffic cones, vehicle headlights, or turbo flares, are used to mark the LZ.
- FM 1960 Fire Ground 1 is the primary radio channel for communication with the helicopter.
- The Incident Commander or a designated ground contact should verify communication with the helicopter.
- All hazards must be communicated to the approaching helicopter via radio.
- Personnel must remain outside the LZ perimeter and use vehicles as shields.
- Eye protection and full protective gear are required for firefighters due to flying debris and rotor wash.
- Fire protection should remain in place during the helicopter's arrival, departure, and when the aircraft motor is running.
- Inspect hazards that were noted during the landing, such as loose signs, debris, and secure them before the helicopter departs.
- The LZ should be maintained until the helicopter is out of sight in case emergency landings are required.
- Provide a LZ a minimum of 250 feet from the incident scene.
