Heart Anatomy and Components
- Aortic Semi-Lunar Valve: Regulates blood flow from the left ventricle to the aorta.
- Ascending Aorta: Major artery that carries oxygenated blood from the left ventricle to the body.
- Bicuspid Valve: Also referred to as the mitral valve; it controls blood flow between the left atrium and left ventricle.
- Brachiocephalic Artery: First branch of the aorta, supplying blood to the right arm and the head.
- Descending Aorta: Continuation of the aorta as it travels downward through the thorax and abdomen.
- Inferior Vena Cava: Major vein that carries deoxygenated blood from the lower body back to the heart.
- Interventricular Septum: Thick wall separating the left and right ventricles, essential for proper heart function.
- Left Atrioventricular Valve: Another name for the bicuspid or mitral valve, managing blood flow from the left atrium to the left ventricle.
- Left Atrium: Chamber of the heart that receives oxygen-rich blood from the pulmonary veins.
- Left Common Carotid Artery: Supplies blood to the left side of the head and neck.
- Left Coronary Artery: Supplies blood to the left side of the heart, branching into the circumflex artery and the left anterior descending artery.
- Left Pulmonary Artery: Carries deoxygenated blood from the right ventricle to the left lung for oxygenation.
- Left Pulmonary Veins: Transmit oxygenated blood from the left lung back to the left atrium.
- Left Subclavian Artery: Supplies blood to the left arm and part of the brain.
- Left Ventricle: Chamber responsible for pumping oxygenated blood to the body.
- Mitral Valve: Also known as the bicuspid valve, located between the left atrium and ventricle.
- Myocardium: The heart muscle responsible for contracting and pumping blood.
- Pulmonary Semilunar Valve: Controls blood flow from the right ventricle into the pulmonary trunk.
- Pulmonary Trunk: Transports deoxygenated blood from the right ventricle to the lungs via the pulmonary arteries.
- Right Atrioventricular Valve: Commonly known as the tricuspid valve, it regulates blood flow between the right atrium and right ventricle.
- Right Atrium: Receives deoxygenated blood from the superior and inferior vena cavae.
- Right Coronary Artery: Supplies blood to the right side of the heart.
- Superior Vena Cava: Major vein that carries deoxygenated blood from the upper body to the right atrium.
- Right Pulmonary Artery: Carries deoxygenated blood to the right lung for oxygenation.
- Right Ventricle: Pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs for oxygenation.
- Right Pulmonary Veins: Bring oxygenated blood from the right lung to the left atrium.
- Tricuspid Valve: The valve located between the right atrium and right ventricle, also known as the right atrioventricular valve.
