Health Belief Model
-
The Health Belief Model (HBM) is a theoretical framework that explains how individuals make decisions about their health behaviors.
-
The HBM identifies the relationships between individual perceptions about susceptibility to and seriousness of disease, sociodemographic variables, environmental cues, perceptions of the benefits and costs, in relation to preventative health actions.
Core Factors Influencing Willingness to Change
- Psychological readiness: Includes motivation and beliefs.
- Situational influences: Consists of family dynamics, resources, access to things like tutoring, transportation, and income levels.
- Environmental conditions: Encompasses access to services and cultural influences.
HBM Constructs
- Perceived Susceptibility: This is an individual's subjective estimation of the likelihood of contracting a disease or experiencing a negative outcome. It encompasses vulnerability and risk perception.
- Perceived Seriousness: This refers to the severity of the consequences of a disease or undesired event, like an injury or infection.
- Perceived Threat: This sub-factor is the combination of perceived susceptibility and perceived seriousness.
- Perceived Benefits: This refers to an individual's perception of the value or usefulness of a behavioral change. It incorporates the potential improvement to their life and risk reduction from the change.
- Perceived Barriers: This is a key construct in behavior change. It encompasses the obstacles perceived by an individual, hindering them from taking action. These barriers can manifest as denial, rationalization, blame, discomfort, and lack of skills.
Modifying Variables
- Modifying variables can alter the perceived benefits of a prevention behavior.
- Demographics: Age, marital status, and ethnicity.
- Socio-psychological: Peer influence and personality traits.
- Structural: Knowledge and past experiences.
Cues to Action
- Cues to action are stimuli that influence behavior. These can be events, people, or things that prompt individuals to change their behaviors.
