Study Notes
Health Effects
- Substances categorized as "Toxic for Reproduction" can impact fertility in both men and women or harm a developing fetus.
- Teratogens are substances that can cause birth defects.
- Mutagens are chemicals that can alter genetic material, potentially leading to genetic changes called mutations.
- Some mutagens are also carcinogenic, meaning they can cause cancer.
Environmental Impact
- Certain chemicals deemed "Dangerous to the Environment" can pose immediate or long-term risks to the environment.
Health Effects
- Some chemicals can have negative effects on human reproduction, leading to fertility issues for both men and women or harm to the developing baby.
- Teratogens are substances that can cause birth defects.
- Mutagens are chemicals that can cause genetic changes, known as mutations. Some mutagens can also be carcinogenic, meaning they can cause cancer.
Environmental Effects
- Certain chemicals can pose immediate or long-term threats to the environment.
Toxic for Reproduction
- Exposure to certain substances can affect fertility in both men and women.
- These same substances can also harm the developing baby during pregnancy.
Teratogen
- Teratogens are substances capable of causing birth defects.
Mutagenic
- Some chemicals are mutagenic and can cause genetic changes called mutations.
- These mutations may also lead to cancer (carcinogenesis).
Dangerous to the Environment
- Certain chemicals can pose immediate or long-term risks to the environment.
Carcinogenic Chemicals
- Carcinogenic chemicals can cause cancer or increase its incidence.
- The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies carcinogenic substances into three categories:
- Category 1: Substances known to be carcinogenic to humans
- Category 2: Substances that may result in the development of cancer
- Category 3: Substances with possible carcinogenic effects but for which adequate information is not available.
Chemical Hazard Symbols and Health Effects
- Harmful (Xn): Chemicals that may cause damage to health.
- Irritant (Xi): Chemicals that can cause inflammation to the skin or mucous membranes (eyes, nose).
- Corrosive (C): Chemicals that cause visible destruction or irreversible damage to living tissue by chemical action at the point of contact.
- Sensitising (Xn or Xi): Chemicals that can cause an allergic reaction to develop over time. Initial exposure may be mild, but sensitization can lead to severe allergic reactions (rashes, asthma) with minimal exposure.
- Very Toxic (T+) or Toxic (T): These chemicals cause health damage at very low (T+) or low (T) levels.
