Grammar and Grammatical Units

  • Grammar is a set of rules that dictate how words are combined to form sentences.

  • Grammar rules dictate which word combinations are allowed and which are not.

  • English grammar rules specify the placement of adjectives and other grammatical parts of speech.

  • Sentences are the largest grammatical units.

  • Sentences are composed of smaller units: clauses, phrases, and words.

  • The rank of units from largest to smallest is: Sentence, Clause, Phrase, and Word.

Parts of Speech

  • A word is a grammatical unit demarcated by spaces on each side.
    • Example: happily - on - book - run - good
  • A phrase is an intermediate unit between a clause and a word.
    • Phrases are composed of one or more words that belong together.
      • Noun phrases can be a single noun or a group of words around a single noun.
      • Verb phrases consists of a main verb and auxiliary verbs.
      • An adjective phrase consists of an adjective and related words.
      • An adverb phrase consists of a single adverb or related words.
      • Prepositional phrases consist of a preposition and noun phrase.

Clauses

  • Clauses are the primary grammatical units in sentences.
  • Clauses contain subjects and verbs.
  • Independent clauses can stand alone and complete a sentence.
  • Dependent clauses must be linked to an independent clause to form complete meaning.

Examples

  • Examples of sentences, clauses, phrases, words are given in the original text.

Word Classes

  • There are open and closed word classes.
  • Open word classes can have new words added to them (e.g., nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs).
  • Closed word classes cannot have new words added to them easily (e.g., determiners, prepositions, conjunctions, and operators verbs).
  • Examples of words within each type of word class are given for better understanding.

Nouns

  • Nouns refer to people, places, things, or physical phenomena.
  • Concrete nouns are nouns describing physical entities and ideas including events(e.g., table, dog, pen).
  • Abstract nouns refer to concepts, ideas, conditions, and states , (e.g., birth, happiness, revival).
  • Proper nouns denote specific individuals, places, or things (e.g., John, Africa, London).
  • Count nouns are things that can be counted (e.g., dog, ideas).
  • Mass nouns denote substances or qualities (e.g., gold, sunshine).
  • Collective nouns refer to groups of people or things (e.g., family, team).
