Study Notes
Gluteal Region Muscles
- Gluteus Maximus: • Originates from the outer surface of ilium, sacrum, coccyx, and gluteal tuberosity of femur • Inserts into the iliotibial tract and gluteal tuberosity of femur • Supplied by the gluteal nerve (L5, S1, 2) • Actions: extends and laterally rotates the hip joint
Gluteus Medius and Minimus
-
Gluteus Medius: • Originates from the outer surface of ilium • Inserts into the lateral surface of the greater trochanter of the femur • Supplied by the superior gluteal nerve (L5, S1) • Actions: abducts the thigh at the hip joint and tilts the pelvis when walking
-
Gluteus Minimus: • Originates from the outer surface of ilium • Inserts into the anterior surface of the greater trochanter of the femur • Supplied by the superior gluteal nerve (L5, S1) • Actions: abducts the thigh at the hip joint and tilts the pelvis when walking
Deep Gluteal Muscles
-
Tensor Fasciae Latae: • Originates from the iliac crest • Inserts into the iliotibial tract • Supplied by the superior gluteal nerve (L4, 5) • Actions: assists gluteus maximus in extending the knee joint
-
Piriformis: • Originates from the anterior surface of the sacrum • Inserts into the upper border of the greater trochanter of the femur • Supplied by the sacral plexus (L5, S1) • Actions: lateral rotator of the thigh at the hip joint
-
Gemellus Superior and Inferior: • Originates from the spine of the ischium and the obturator membrane • Inserts into the upper border of the greater trochanter of the femur • Supplied by the sacral plexus (L5, S1) • Actions: lateral rotator of the thigh at the hip joint
