Study Notes
Functions of the Urinary (Excretory) System
- Filters blood
- Separates toxins from nutrients
- Stores and carries urine out of the body
Organs of the Urinary (Excretory) System
- Kidneys: The main organs of the excretory system, divided into three regions:
- Renal cortex (outer layer)
- Renal medulla (inner layer)
- Renal pelvis (carries urine from the kidneys to the ureters)
- Ureters: Two thin tubes connecting the kidneys to the bladder, carrying urine.
- Bladder: A hollow, muscular organ that stores urine.
- Urethra: A tube through which urine leaves the body. The urethral sphincter helps keep urine in the bladder until voiding.
Other Organs of Excretion
- Skin: The largest organ in the body that protects against microorganisms, dehydration, UV light, and mechanical damage. It excretes sweat and eliminates compounds like NaCl and urea.
- Lungs: Primary respiratory organs that help take in oxygen and expel carbon dioxide and water vapor.
- Liver: Removes toxins from the blood, maintains healthy blood sugar levels, regulates blood clotting, and performs other vital functions.
