Study Notes
Converting Between Fractions, Decimals, and Percentages
- Fractions, decimals, and percentages can represent the same value
- It is possible to convert between these different representations of numbers
Converting Percentages to Fractions
- Percentages are out of a hundred; thirty percent becomes thirty one-hundredths (30/100)
- To reduce the fraction, divide both numbers by ten
- Dividing by ten can be simplified by crossing out the zero in each number
- Thirty percent (30%) is equivalent to three tenths (3/10)
Converting Percentages to Decimals
- Move the decimal place twice to the left
- One hundred is two orders of magnitude greater than one
- For example, thirty percent (30%) becomes 0.3 (zero point three)
- With 8.25% sales tax, move the decimal twice to the left, inserting a zero if needed, resulting in 0.0825
- To compute sales tax on an item, multiply its price by this decimal
Converting Decimals to Percentages
- Move the decimal twice to the right
- This is the same as multiplying by a hundred
- 0.84 becomes eighty-four percent (84%)
Converting Fractions to Percentages
- Convert the fraction into a decimal first
- To find the decimal of three fifths (3/5), determine the decimal of one-fifth (1/5); one fifth (1/5) is 0.2; therefore three fifths (3/5) is 0.6
- Move the decimal over twice to the right and get sixty percent (60%)
Table of Common Conversions
- One should convert between fractions, decimals, and percentages with ease
- These are all just different ways of communicating ideas that are useful in different scenarios
Arranging Values
- To arrange 45%, 21/50, and 0.43 from least to greatest, one must convert them to the same format:
- 45% is 45/100
- Convert 21/50 to a fraction with a denominator of 100 by multiplying both numbers by two: 42/100
- Convert 0.43 by moving the decimal over twice to get 43%, which is 43/100
- Now they can be put in order: 42/100 (21/50), then 43/100 (0.43), then 45/100 (45%)
