Study Material and Test Description
- The study material will help prepare for the Certificate of Fitness exam for fire guards for impairment.
- The study material consists of 2 parts
- The exam covers the entire booklet. The booklet will not be provided during the test.
- The material includes information from the New York City Fire Code (2022).
- It's crucial to understand the booklet to pass the exam.
- The study material does not include all the rules and regulations required to work as a fire guard.
- Students are responsible for familiarizing themselves with the relevant sections of the New York City Fire Code (2022).
- Reference the 2022 Fire Code sections 401.3, 408, 901, 906 and NFPA 25 chapter 14 (2002 Ed.)
Part 1: Requirements and Duties
- Fire guards are trained to reduce the threat of fires in various locations.
- Fire guards are responsible for maintaining a fire watch.
- Fire guards should have general knowledge of portable fire extinguishers and alarm pull stations.
- Fire guards must inspect assigned areas every hour, for smoke/fire hazards.
- Report any problems immediately to the building owner.
- Locations inspected may vary.
- Check exits, stairways, hallways, and doors for blockage.
- Ensure self-closing doors are not obstructed.
- Check for emergency lighting, exit signs, and locations of portable fire extinguishers.
- Fire guard must enforce no smoking policies in the area and inspect for buildup of trash/rubbish.
- Keep an inspection record for at least 48 hours.

Part 3: Lithium-Ion Battery Safety
