    Health and Wellness Program

    • The Spring Fire Department Wellness Program aims to encourage and facilitate optimal wellness for all Spring Fire Department members.
    • The program includes:
      • Nutritional counseling and/or education
      • Consistent participation in fitness training
      • Fitness assessments
      • Annual physicals
      • Professional assistance and/or advice from an on-duty peer fitness trainer
    • The Wellness Program Coordinator (WPC) directs the program.

    Program Scope

    • All SFD members who use self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) must participate in all components of the SFD Wellness Program.
    • Members not subject to SCBA use (administration staff, support members) are still required to participate in the annual medical physical.

    Annual Medical Physicals

    • The contracted HCP conducts annual medical physicals which include a health risk appraisal, physical exam, pulmonary function test, hearing test, blood chemistry lab tests, and cardiopulmonary and cardiovascular assessments.
    • The HCP will provide SFD HR with a document certifying each member is medically certified to perform emergency operation duties.

    Annual Fitness Assessments

    • All SFD members who use self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) are assessed physically on a yearly basis.
    • The assessment is conducted during the annual medical physicals and includes measurements of muscular strength, muscular endurance, body composition, aerobic capacity, and flexibility.
    • Scoring is age-relevant, divided into 10-year increments.
    • Categories of "Poor", "Fair", "Good", "Excellent", and "Superior" are assigned based on assessment scores.
    • Incentives are offered for "Good", "Excellent", or "Superior" scores.
    • Members obtaining "Fair" or below are prescribed an Exercise/Nutrition prescription developed by the WPC or a PFT.

    Fitness Training

    • Fitness training is part of the program and includes various components.

Fitness Training - Peer Fitness Trainers

    • PFT's work in the Fitness Training program.
    • PFT's are fire department personnel trained to provide wellness education, nutritional guidance, and assistance in the design of fitness routines.
    • A PFT must report to their immediate supervisor if they observe a member exhibiting behaviors or actions that indicate a safety hazard.
    • An assigned PFT will ensure that members who need it are provided with proper time to workout while on duty.
    • PFT's must:
      • Follow the rules and procedures outlined in the Spring Fire Department Policies and Procedures Manual
      • Ensure the safety of all departmental members participating in the fitness training program
      • Remain in the first due response area or coordinate alternative options with the on-duty Chief
      • Project a professional image at all times
      • Remind crew to use the time for fitness training
    • PFT's cannot:
      • Use assigned fitness training time for their personal needs
      • Neglect to schedule fitness training times that are consistent with the department's minimum fitness standards.
      • Fail to properly monitor and supervise the fitness training program of their crew
      • Neglect the fitness training needs of their crew
      • Perform duties that could place a member at an undue risk.

    Fitness Assessment Categories

    • Superior: 450 - 495
    • Excellent: 400 - 449
    • Good : 300 - 399
    • Fair: 200 - 299

    Fitness Assessment Components

    • Treadmill - Bruce Protocol
    • Push Ups - Max in 1 minute
    • Sit and Reach
    • Low Plank
    • (fifth component not specified)

    Treadmill - Bruce Protocol

    • The treadmill is used to assess cardiovascular function.
    • The text details time measurements on the Bruce protocol.
    • The Bruce Protocol consists of several stages, each of which lasts 3 minutes.
    • The test concludes when 80% of the theoretical maximum heart rate (220 minus age) is reached.
    • The time measurement should be determined by the individual's age.
    • The treadmill speed for each stage is indicated in the table, along with percentage grade.

    Push Ups

    • Push ups are an assessment of muscular strength and endurance.
    • Each push up should be performed with the chest touching a depth marker, which is 3 inches above the ground.
    • The number of successful push ups is recorded and compared with the score table based on the individual's age.

    Sit and Reach

    • The Sit and Reach Assessment measures flexibility of the hamstrings and lower back.
    • Individuals are asked to reach forward as far as they can with their legs extended.
    • The measurement is recorded in inches and compared to the score table based on the individual's age.

    Low Plank

    • The Low Plank Assessment measures core strength and endurance.
    • The individual must maintain a plank position with the body in a straight line, supported by the forearms and toes.
    • The time held in the plank position is then compared with the score table using the individual's age.

    Body Fat Determination

    • Body fat is assessed using a 3-point caliper test.
    • The Jackson Pollock Formula is used to calculate body fat percentage from caliper measurements.
    • Body fat percentage is categorized in the table according to age and gender.
    • The test is used to determine body composition, which can be used to create personalized fitness goals.
