    Supervisor Responsibilities

    • Lieutenants are responsible for supervising and managing the activities of personnel assigned to their company and station.
    • Effectively communicate and support all plans, policies, procedures, and directives of the Bernalillo County Fire Department and the County of Bernalillo.
    • Set a good example for subordinates and require them to meet all standards of conduct and performance.
    • Must successfully complete and/or maintain all training requirements according to timelines established by the department or the County.
    • Establish procedures necessary for efficient operations, promoting coordination and cooperation among subordinates.
    • Develop long and short-range goals for their crew.
    • Prepare, develop and mentor subordinates to assume the duties, qualifications, and responsibilities of their next higher position within the department.
    • Responsible for maintaining work areas free from any item that violates Bernalillo County policy or Administrative Instruction.

    General Duties and Responsibilities

    • Ensure crew members have completed and documented monthly PPE inspections.
    • Communicate with co-station officers to maintain harmonious interactions between the crews.
    • Properly use the Chain of Command.
    • In the event of an incident requiring risk management paperwork, contact the regional Commander to discuss the issue and necessary paperwork.
    • Inspect the work of subordinates for effectiveness in performing their duties. Provide coaching and counseling when applicable.

    Daily Duties and Responsibilities

    • Verify the "Telestaff" roster and ensure that all crewmembers are at work and on time for their shift.
    • Ensure that crew members are fit for duty (mentally and physically) and notify superiors as necessary to ensure the safety of all crewmembers.
    • At the end of each day, check the BCFD main calendar on SharePoint for the following day's scheduled activities.
    • On the first shift of the 48-hour cycle, attend the department's morning briefing conducted through the video conferencing system.
    • Conduct crew briefing to outline any training, public relations events, or other activities planned for the shift, and to pass on information from the department's morning briefing.
    • Ensure that crewmembers complete all assigned tasks and duties (verbally assigned, written or implied).
    • Ensure accountability procedures are followed as per "300-007 Personal Accountability System" policy and procedure.
    • Ensure that the following paperwork is completed by the assigned crew:
      • Fire and EMS reports completed and reviewed as per EMS/Fire report writing manual.
      • SCBA forms including After Use Inspection.
      • Property Asset Log is completed.
      • Shift Log.
      • Narcotics Log.
      • Truck Check Log.
      • SLR Log.
      • Target Solutions training rosters.
      • Hold-Over Reports are completed per policy.
      • Fitness Equipment Log is completed.
      • Any and all other paperwork as assigned is completed.
    • Assure that all daily cleaning assignments are completed before the end of shift unless prevented by emergency response.
    • Ensure that company level training occurs and all crewmembers participate.
    • Complete and submit QA documentation as necessary.
    • Oversee and direct the activities of the assigned station crew.
    • Receive briefing from the off-going company officer to include information about the stations and apparatus conditions, pending work orders, etc. for all apparatus and stations assigned to that district.

    Relief of Duty

    • Lieutenants must contact the Battalion Commander and notify them of any concerns regarding a crew member(s).
    • The Department shall take immediate action to deal with personnel who are physically or psychologically unfit for duty.
    • Lieutenants will document all details or actions of the issue in the event that further investigation is warranted or initiated.
