Minimum Staffing Requirements
- Minimum crew for suppression apparatus: 3 personnel, preferred 4 personnel
- Required personnel minimum for suppression apparatus: Officer, Apparatus Operator as driver, Firefighter
- Rescue 71 minimum staffing: 3 personnel
- Rehab 70 minimum staffing: Apparatus Operator as driver
Filling Open Positions
- Filling of open positions due to PTO, sick time, or other vacancies
- First day of the oncoming shift's 48-hour tour: Responsibility of personnel on the previous shift to fill the position.
- Second day of the 48-hour tour: District Chief responsible for filling the position.
- Volunteer or part-time employees: Cannot be held over beyond their scheduled timeframe. Overtime rolls to the next eligible full-time employee, unless the volunteer or part-time personnel are available.
Shift Filling Process
- District Chief notifies personnel of vacancy in their relief position.
- Personnel attempt to fill the vacancy via contacting available Full-Time, Part-Time, or Volunteer personnel.
- If no personnel are willing to fill the position, the District Chief is responsible for filling the vacancy.
- If no personnel are available, the existing personnel are considered held over for the first 12 or 24 hours of the open shift.
Open Position on the Second Day of a Tour of Duty
- District Chief responsible for filling open positions on the 2nd day of a shift's tour of duty.
- If no available personnel, off-duty personnel will be called in using a pre-assigned "mandatory call back" calendar.
- Mandatory call back calendar is alphabetical and displayed on the Master PTO calendar.
- Personnel can trade their pre-assigned mandatory call back days, subject to District Chief approval.
- Mandatory call back is not required if the employee is on department business/training, or injury/medical leave/FMLA.
- Personnel must be available for contact from the District Chief until 0615 on their pre-assigned mandatory call back day.
- Failure to respond to a mandatory call back will result in disciplinary action.
- Personnel are paid from the time they are contacted until the time they are relieved.
Captain Positions
- Vacancies are filled by offering open shifts to available Full-Time and Part-Time Captains.
- If no Captain available, personnel will act in the position and roll the overtime down to the firefighter rank.
- Mandatory call back procedures as defined in "Open positions on the 2nd day of a tour of duty/Mandatory call back" apply.
District Chief Positions
- Vacancies are filled by offering open shifts to available Full-Time District Chiefs.
- If no District Chief available, a Senior Captain or Captain will act in the position and roll the overtime down to the firefighter rank.
