Study Notes
Purpose and Scope
- Establishes procedures for reporting work-related injuries and associated documentation.
- Applies to all members of the Kansas City, Missouri Fire Department.
Reporting Injuries
- Employees must inform their immediate supervisor of any injury sustained during employment.
- If the supervisor is unavailable, contact the person in charge or a designated representative.
- Injuries must be reported to the nurse line (816-905-0515) immediately after occurrence.
- Supervisors are responsible for notifying the Battalion Chief/Division Head of injuries.
- Medical treatment during duty requires the Deputy's notification.
Communicable Disease and Hazardous Materials Exposure
- Immediate supervisor must be notified of exposure to communicable diseases or hazardous materials.
- In case of communicable disease exposure, contact the ADC (Car 120, 130) for assistance in reporting.
- For hazardous material exposure, notify dispatch for Haz-Mat response and complete the Hazardous Materials Report.
Medical Care and Treatment
- Supervisors or those in charge must provide medical care and transport injured employees to a chosen authorized facility.
- Emergency care may be sought at the nearest hospital if the injury is urgent.
- Follow-up with a Fire Department designated occupational medicine provider is required within 24 hours if non-designated care was initially received.
Initial Treatment and Documentation
- After contacting the nurse line, employees must forward documentation from treating medical providers to their supervisor and Health Advocate.
Follow-Up Procedures
- Employees are responsible for obtaining and forwarding Work Status Reports to their supervisor and Health Advocate after each medical visit.
- They must update the Battalion Chief/Division Head regarding their work status and expected recovery timeframe.
Modified Duty Program
- Designed to help employees transition back to full duty after injuries or illnesses.
- Available to all members unable to perform regular duties due to duty-related injuries or extended medical conditions.
- Requests for modified duty must comply with General Administrative Guideline 2-3.
Return to Work Policy
- Employees must provide documentation from attending physicians confirming they can return to work without restrictions after recovery.
