**General Administrative Guidelines** ------------------------------------------------------------ -------------------------- ------------- Subject: REPORTING WORK RELATED INJURIES Effective Date: 2/1/21 GAG: 2-2 Applies to: ALL FIRE DEPARTMENT PERSONNEL Supersedes: 1/1/04 Page 1 of 2 Responsible Committee: Health, Wellness & Safety Committee Next Review Date: 2/1/24 ------------------------------------------------------------ -------------------------- ------------- **PURPOSE:** To establish uniform procedures for reporting work related injuries, receiving treatment for injuries and the completion of the associated documentation in a timely manner. **SCOPE:** Applies to all members of the Kansas City, Missouri Fire Department. **GUIDELINES:** It is the policy of the KCFD to provide compensation and medical treatment, under the Missouri Workers\' Compensation Law, Administrative Regulation 7-7 and the Collective Bargaining Agreement for all employees of the KCFD for injuries or fatalities due to accidents arising out of and in the course of employment. **REPORTING** An employee who receives an injury while in the course of employment with the KCFD shall advise the immediate supervisor of the injury. If the immediate supervisor is not available, then the person in charge of the incident/district/division/shift or a designated representative should be contacted and informed of the injury. If the employee is unable to report the injury due to the extent of the injuries, any employee at the scene may report the injury. The immediate supervisor must notify the employee\'s Battalion Chief/Division Head of the injury as soon as possible. The Battalion Chief/Division Head shall notify the Deputy of any injury when the employee receives medical treatment during the assigned tour of duty. When an on the job injury occurs, the supervisor shall contact the nurse line (NL) at 816-905-0515 and in conjunction with the employee report the injury. **[If]** a supervisor is not available, the injured employee will contact the NL to report the injury. If the injured employee is unable to participate in the call due to the injury, the supervisor will contact the NL as soon as possible to report the injury. **[If the supervisor or the employee believe work status should be altered as a result of the on the job injury, a doctor, physician's assistant or nurse practitioner must examine the employee to determine work status. No employee may be placed off work or on MD as a result of a phone call to the NL. ]** When an exposure to a communicable disease or hazardous material occurs, the employee shall notify the immediate supervisor and notify the nurse line. In the case of exposure to a communicable disease, the employee or employee supervisor if employee is unable to report, shall [call the ADC (Car 120, 130) at the time of the exposure to have the ADC assist in the reporting process and filling out the proper documentation.] In the case of exposure to hazardous material notify dispatch to contact Haz-Mat to respond and, the employee shall also complete the KCFD Hazardous Materials Report and forward the completed forms to his/her supervisor who shall forward the report to the Battalion Chief of Hazardous Materials Division. **General Administrative Guidelines** ------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ ------------- Subject: REPORTING WORK RELATED INJURIES Effective Date: 8/1/99 GAG: 2-2 Applies to: ALL FIRE DEPARTMENT PERSONNEL Supersedes: GAG 2-2 - 8/1/99 Page 2 of 2 ------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ ------------- **MEDICAL CARE/TREATMENT** When an employee is injured in the course of employment with the KCFD, the injured employee\'s supervisor or the employee in charge at the scene, if the supervisor is not available, shall render or have rendered such medical care as may be practical and shall transport or have transported to an authorized hospital or physician, of the member's choice, to provide treatment for the injury. If the injury appears to be of an emergency nature or requires immediate attention, the injured employee may be taken to the nearest hospital or facility, authorized or not by the City for treatment of injured employees. Following treatment for a work related injury that initially occurred with a provider that is not a Fire Department designated occupational medicine (Occ Med) provider, the employee will follow up with a Fire Department designated Occ Med provider within 24 hours or on Monday, whichever occurs first. **INITIAL TREATMENT** After calling the NL, and if the employee received treatment, any paperwork completed by the treating medical provider should be forwarded, by the employee, to his/her supervisor and to the Health Advocate. **FOLLOW-UP** To keep the supervisor and the KCFD apprised of the medical status of the member, Work Status Reports shall be obtained from the physician, by the employee, for each follow up visit. This form shall be completed by the physician and forwarded, by the employee, to the Health Advocate and his /her supervisor following treatment. The employee shall be responsible for updating the Battalion Chief/Division Head of the employee's work status and expected length of disability, if available. **MODIFIED DUTY** The purpose of the modified duty program is to provide a transition period for employees who are recovering from injury or illness that facilitates the safe return to full duty. It is the policy of the KCFD that modified duty will be made available to ~~all~~ members who cannot perform the essential functions of their regular assignment because of duty related illness or injury, off duty injury, or medical conditions of extended duration as set forth in this policy which do not allow the performance of the essential functions of regular duty. Requests and assignments shall be handled according to General Administrative Guideline 2-3. **RETURN TO WORK** When all attending physicians have released an employee to return to full duty, the employee shall provide the Health Advocate and his/her supervisor with return to work documentation stating that the member can return to work without restrictions.
