    Study Notes

Female Reproductive Tract Anatomy and Physiology

    • The female reproductive tract is a series of interconnected tubes
    • Major structures include: ovaries, oviducts, uterus, cervix, vagina, and external genitalia
    • Ovaries are gonads, producing gametes (ova/oocytes) and hormones
      • Oocytes are found within follicles
      • Follicles in the cortex include Primordial, Primary (single layer), and Antral (Graafian follicle) (multiple layers)
        • Primordial follicles are the most immature and contain one oocyte surrounded by a single layer of cells
        • Primary follicles are slightly more advanced, with one oocyte and one layer of cells around it.
        • Antral follicles have an antrum (fluid-filled cavity) with multiple layers surrounding the oocyte.
      • Follicles also include Corpus Hemorrhagicum (bloody body), Corpus Luteum (yellow body), and Corpus Albicans (white body)
    • Oviducts (fallopian tubes) transport the ovum, sperm, and embryo, and are the site of fertilization.
    • Uterus provides a suitable environment for the embryo and sperm, and plays a role in female fertility by producing hormones such as prostaglandin F2-alpha (PGF2α) to cause luteolysis (corpus luteum regression).
    • Cervix secretes mucus, acts as a passageway for sperm and the fetus, and prevents bacterial infections.
    • Vagina is a copulatory organ, site for urine expulsion, and a passive birth canal.
    • Vulva is the external part of the female reproductive tract; it is the passageway for fetus and urine, receives the penis during copulation, and helps prevent microorganisms from entering the tract.
