Ethnocentrism and Cultural Relativism

Understanding Ethnocentrism

Ethnocentrism refers to the belief that one's own culture is superior to others. It is the tendency to view the world through the lens of one's own cultural norms, values, and beliefs, leading to incorrect assumptions and judgment of behaviors and practices of other cultures. While ethnocentrism is often associated with negative consequences, such as war and genocide, it can also manifest in subtle forms, like dismissive attitudes towards unfamiliar cultural practices.
