Ethics in Marketing
-
Ethics defined: Ethics is the science and art of determining what is good/bad, right/wrong in terms of moral behavior. It differentiates between good and bad, right and wrong.
-
Ethics vs. Law: Laws are government-mandated rules; ethics involves moral considerations not always codified in law. Competition is generally considered good; using unfair methods to undermine competitors is unethical.
-
Marketing defined: Marketing is a multifaceted process of exploring, creating, and delivering value to satisfy target market needs while achieving profitability. It focuses on understanding customer needs and creating products/services that deliver value (benefits exceeding the cost).
-
Ethical vs. Unethical marketing: Ethical marketing respects consumers, uses proper ingredients, and employs appropriate promotion/strategies. Unethical marketing might mislead consumers, through deceptive practices as, exaggerating health benefits or using false claims. An example is a soup claiming to be healthy, but potentially high in sodium.
-
Importance of marketing ethics: Ethical organizational behavior benefits both the organization and society. Dishonest practices can harm consumers, damaging reputation and impacting long-term success, as shown with instances of deceptive ingredients or marketing tactics that erode consumer trust. (Example: Dhara Oil incident).
-
Developing positive attitudes: Ethical marketing fosters positive attitudes towards products/services and an organization. The lack of ethics can lead to trust loss.
