Reign of Alfonso XIII
- Alfonso XIII reached majority age on May 17, 1902, at the age of 16.
- He took the oath of office and became King of Spain, marking the beginning of the first third of the 20th century in Spanish history.
- His reign was divided into four distinct phases: bipartisanship, concentration governments, the Primo de Rivera dictatorship, and the Berenguer dictatorship.
Periods of Alfonso XIII's Reign
- Bipartisanship (1902-1917): Conservatives and liberals alternated in power, but monarchial and military influence heavily impacted politics, leading to instability. The Moroccan campaigns (1909-1927) and worker protests contributed to the unrest.
- Concentration Governments (1917-1923): A succession of unstable governments were formed in response to political crisis which were overcome by military intervention and brought about a definitive end to the two-party system. Thirteen governments were formed over four years.
- Primo de Rivera Dictatorship (1923-1930): General Miguel Primo de Rivera led a coup d'état and implemented a fascist-leaning dictatorship with the support of the monarchy and conservative elements (church and military). The dictatorship was influenced by the 1921 Battle of Annual.
- Berenguer Dictatorship (1930-1931): This short-lived dictatorial period followed the resignation of Primo de Rivera, with General Dámaso Berenguer appointed as his successor.
The Semana Trágica (Tragic Week)
- In 1909, the military mobilized 40,000 reservists for the Moroccan War, which sparked protests in Barcelona.
- Demonstrations escalated into riots and violence, including attacks on churches and buildings.
- A harsh military response and subsequent repression followed.
Second Republic
- The Second Republic was proclaimed in April 1931 following the abdication of Alfonso XIII.
