Study Notes

Erector Spinae Muscles Overview

  • The Erector Spinae muscles function to laterally flex the vertebral column to the same side unilaterally and extend the vertebral column bilaterally.

Origin

  • Originates from the posterior surface of the sacrum, iliac crest, spinous processes of lower lumbar and last two thoracic vertebrae.

Insertion

  • Attaches to the ribs, spinous and transverse processes of cervical and thoracic vertebrae, and the mastoid process of the temporal bone.

Innervation

  • Innervated by spinal nerves.

Spinalis Muscle

  • Origin: Arises from a common tendon, spinous processes of upper lumbar and lower thoracic vertebrae, ligamentum nuchae, and spinous process of C-7.
  • Insertion: Inserts on the spinous processes of upper thoracic and cervical vertebrae (except C-1).

Longissimus Muscle

  • Origin: Originates from a common tendon and transverse process of upper five thoracic vertebrae.
  • Insertion: Inserts on lower 9 ribs, transverse processes of thoracic and cervical vertebrae, and the mastoid process of temporal bone.

Iliocostalis Muscle

  • Origin: Starts from the posterior surface of ribs 1-12.
  • Insertion: Attaches to the posterior surface of ribs 1-6 (thoracic), posterior surface of ribs 6-12 (lumborum), and the transverse processes of lower cervical and lumbar vertebrae 1-3.
