Employee Self-Help
- Employees are encouraged to seek help on their own before job-related problems develop.
Confidentiality
- The Employee Assistance Program maintains confidentiality of records regarding employees affected by alcoholism, as permissible by law.
Alcoholic Beverages in BSO Facilities or Vehicles
- Employees are not allowed to bring or store alcoholic beverages in BSO facilities or vehicles, except in the line of duty or if the beverages are held as evidence.
Drug Use
- Employees are not permitted to use drugs or controlled substances except when lawfully prescribed by a physician, dentist, or licensed medical professional.
- Employees taking drugs or controlled substances that may impair their ability to function properly must notify their supervisor before reporting for duty.
- The supervisor may determine the suitability of the employee for duty.
- Employees are not allowed to remain on duty while their ability to perform is impaired by any substance or medication.

Reasonable Suspicion of Impairment
- If a supervisor believes an employee's ability is impaired, they may remove the employee from their duties and direct them to submit to reasonable suspicion drug testing.

- The supervisor will ensure transportation for the employee to BSO's contracted test laboratory as soon as practical.
- The supervisor will notify the respective commander regarding the reasonable suspicion and the actions taken.
- The supervisor will ensure the employee who may be impaired will not be permitted to operate a vehicle.
Steroids
- Steroids are synthetically produced variants of the naturally occurring male hormone testosterone.
- Anabolic steroids are contained within Schedule III of Florida Statutes 893.03 and are considered a violation of policy and applicable state and/or federal law.
- Steroid abuse constitutes illegal behavior under Florida Statutes and federal law.
Employee Assistance Program
- The Employee Assistance Program provides confidential assistance to employees in solving personal difficulties and/or directing employees to agencies or persons competent to deal with their particular problems.
- Employees seeking help for alcohol abuse problems will not have their job security or promotional opportunities jeopardized solely by their request for diagnosis and treatment.
- Supervisors observing unsatisfactory job performance, attendance, behavior, or poor health from their employee that they believe to be the result of alcoholism will direct the employee to the Employee Assistance Program.
