Study Notes
MAYDAY, MAYDAY, MAYDAY Procedure
- Purpose: To ensure all personnel at an emergency scene are aware of a MAYDAY call from a trapped or lost firefighter. A quick response is crucial given the limited time firefighters might have. The purpose is to locate and rescue the personnel.
- Scope: Applies to all personnel operating at any emergency incident.
- Responsibilities:
- Incident Commander: Implements the procedure.
- Everyone: Must recognize dangerous conditions and take action immediately if a firefighter is lost or trapped.
- Division/Group Officers: Responsible for activities within their assigned division, including the integrity of companies and continued plan execution, and prioritizing rescue efforts.
- Company officers/Team Leaders: Must maintain crew integrity at all times and report immediately to the IC if a member is lost, trapped, or separated.
- Firefighters: Responsible for their personal safety and ensuring crew integrity.
Guidelines for MAYDAY Rescue
- Critical Time Sensitivity: Rescuing a lost or trapped firefighter in a toxic environment (IDLH) is time-sensitive due to limited air supply. Survival depends on:
- Early notification that a firefighter needs help.
- Firefighter's ability to survive.
- Standardized, prioritized, and aggressive actions by the Incident Commander (IC) and Rapid Intervention Team (RIT).
Declaring a MAYDAY
- Conditions: When a responder or a member is lost, trapped, disoriented, injured, and needs assistance.
- Procedure:
- Call "MAYDAY, MAYDAY, MAYDAY" on the designated channel.
- Provide location, unit number, name, assignment, and resources required.
- Lost/Trapped Firefighters:
- Stay together.
- Use key indicators to assist RIT (e.g., tapping tools on the ground, shining flashlights).
Command Response to MAYDAY
- Actions:
- Declare "Emergency Traffic Only" to halt all other radio transmissions.
- Direct fireground units to a different channel.
- Keep critical communications (IC, RIT, MAYDAY firefighter, dispatcher) on the original frequency.
- Immediately take action for rescue, including requesting additional alarms.
- Provide a Brief Progress Report.
- Conduct a Personal Accountability Roll-call.
- Determine needs (if possible).
- Commit RIT to location for rescue.
- Establish a Rescue Division/Group with a Safety Officer.
CommCenter Response to MAYDAY
- Actions:
- Alert personnel on scene
- Immediately assign all operations not related to the MAYDAY to a new channel
- Request additional emergency services (e.g., EMS)
- Ensure responding units are aware of communication changes.
- Monitor for updates to the on-scene situation.
