    MAYDAY Procedures

    Defined Firefighter Emergencies

    • Lost: disoriented, off your line, confused
    • Collapse: stairs, roof, floor, etc.
    • Caught: entangled by wires
    • Trapped: debris, fire, smoke, heat
    • General: any other condition that puts firefighter(s) in need of rescue

    Calling the MAYDAY

    • Remain calm, conserve air.
    • Activate the orange EIB (Emergency Identifier Button) on the radio.
    • Call "MAYDAY, MAYDAY, MAYDAY" and give the LUNAR report:
      • L: Location
      • U: Unit
      • N: Name (First and Last) & Nature
      • A: Assignment and Amount of remaining Air
      • R: Resources needed
    • Activate the PASS device.

    IC Response to a MAYDAY

    • Advise all personnel that non-critical radio traffic must cease.
    • Conduct a Personnel Accountability Roll call (PAR) if the identification and location of the lost or trapped firefighter(s) is unknown.
    • Commit the RIC to the most appropriate location to initiate a rescue.
    • Consider having all companies except the affected Mayday firefighter(s) manually change to the Channel P (Emergency Operations Channel EMR OPS).
    • Consider assigning Firefighter Rescue operations to an available on-scene DC, Management Intern, Company Officer, or the DC responding with the additional Alarms dispatched for the Mayday.
    • Confirm that assignments, made prior to the Mayday, are still being carried out and not abandoned to assist with firefighter rescue.
    • Confirm with FAO that all radio channels in use on incident are being monitored.

    FAO Response to a MAYDAY

    • Immediately notify the IC of any EIB activations.
    • Broadcast Mayday alert tone when the IC or Companies on scene are unaware of the Mayday.
    • Dedicate a dispatcher to monitor the MAYDAY event.
    • Dispatch two additional alarms, Rescue Task Force, Haz-Mat and DC.
    • Dispatch EMS for transport.
    • Assist the IC with deciphering radio traffic as appropriate.

    If MAYDAY Call Occurs on an Unassigned Tactical Channel

    • Remain with the firefighter on that channel. Do not attempt to have the firefighter change channels.
    • Advise all units on that channel that it is to be used for emergency traffic only.
    • Advise the IC of the situation and assist as indicated by the IC.
