    Line

    • Lines are the most basic design element
    • Different types of lines can evoke different feelings.
      • Horizontal lines: evoke relaxation, calmness, and restfulness (associated with sunsets, ocean waves)
      • Vertical lines: convey height, strength, dignity, and stability
      • Diagonal lines: suggest different levels of energy, the degree of the angle and total number of angles (like a lightning bolt)
      • Curved lines: feel softer and associated with feelings of organization, eternity, uniformity, natural communication of freedom and openness

    Shape and Form

    • Shape: the outline of something
    • Form: the physical shape of a three-dimensional object
    • Form characteristics:
      • contains volume and mass
      • has height, width, and depth
    • Types of form:
      • Realistic: lifelike, traditional, familiar
      • Abstract: rearranges or stylizes recognizable objects, altered traits, contemporary, creative, and artistic
      • Geometric: uses squares, rectangles, circles; communicates organization, order, planning, and tailored feeling
      • Free form: random flowing; found in nature (plants, stones, wood); communicates freedom, untraditional, unfamiliar, and different from realistic forms

    Space

    • Space is the area around the form
    • Given boundaries by the walls
    • Large and small spaces have different appeals and dislikes
    • Ways to give the illusion of more space include:
      • Enhancing the space
      • Defining areas within the space
    • High mass visuals appear crowded and low mass visuals appear sparse and minimalist

    Texture

    • Texture describes how a surface feels or appears to feel
    • Two types of texture
      • Tactile: how a surface actually feels to the touch
      • Visual: the illusion of how something feels

    Pattern

    • Pattern is the repetition of a design in an orderly manner
    • Types include Geometric, Naturalistic, and Abstract
