Study Notes
Electronystagmography (ENG)
- Detects involuntary eye movements (nystagmus) to assess vestibular ear system disease.
- Electrodes placed near eyes; eye movements recorded during ear canal stimulation (cold water/air injection).
- Specialist interprets recordings as normal or abnormal.
Nursing Actions (ENG)
- Ask simple questions (name recall, math problems) during procedure to ensure alertness.
- Maintain client on bed rest and NPO post-procedure until vertigo resolves.
Client Education (ENG)
- Fast before procedure and restrict caffeine, alcohol, sedatives, and antihistamines for several days prior.
- Not performed on pacemaker patients (pacemaker signals interfere).
Caloric Testing
- Can be performed concurrently with ENG.
- Water (warmer/cooler than body temperature) instilled in the ear to induce nystagmus.
- Eye response to cold/warm water is diagnostic for vestibular disorders.
Nursing Actions (Caloric Testing)
- Client should follow same restrictions as ENG.
Client Education (Caloric Testing)
- Be aware of restrictions listed for ENG.
