Study Notes
Electric and Hybrid-Electric Vehicle Considerations
- Always assume high-voltage (HV) batteries and components are energized and fully charged.
- Exposed HV components pose shock hazards.
- HV battery vapors can be toxic and flammable.
- Physical vehicle or battery damage can release toxic/flammable gases and cause fires.
- Flooded HV vehicles may have high voltage and short circuits, causing shock hazards.
Determining if EV or HEV Involved
- If an EV or HEV, advise dispatch and responders.
- Be alert, potentially delayed fire with damaged lithium-ion batteries.
- Consult with the responding fire department for actions.
- Report leaking fluids, sparks, smoke, flames, temperature increases, or unusual noises (gurgling, popping, hissing) from the HV battery compartment (call 911).
- Notify authorized service center or vehicle manufacturer, additional steps may be needed to secure, discharge, handle, and store the HV battery.
- Notify and advise the storage facility of actions taken.
Vehicle Shutdown and Disabling
- Contact an authorized service center or manufacturer for recovery/transport steps.
- Approach from the sides to avoid road blockage, check for vehicle operation (engine noise may not be present).
- Park in Park, apply brakes, turn off vehicle, activate hazard lights, and remove keys.
- Move keys at least 16ft from the vehicle.
- Follow vehicle manual or recovery guide for transport, using correct attachment points.
- Avoid high-voltage cabling and areas marked in orange or with high-voltage warnings.
Storing Vehicles
- Do not store severely damaged EVs/HEVs with lithium-ion batteries near structures, vehicles, or combustibles within 50 feet of them.
- Ensure passenger/cargo areas are well-ventilated.
- Inspect vehicle for leaking fluids, sparks, smoke, flames, gurgling, bubbling from HV batteries (call 911 if needed).
- Maintain access for monitoring and emergency response.
