Study Notes

Elbow Joint

  • The elbow joint is a composite joint, meaning it consists of three separate joints within a single articular capsule.

Joints within the Elbow

  • Humeroulnar Joint: A hinge joint formed between the trochlea of the humerus and the trochlear notch of the ulna, allowing for flexion and extension.
  • Humeroradial Joint: A ball-and-socket joint formed between the capitulum of the humerus and the concave radial head, enabling flexion and extension, as well as some limited rotation.
  • Proximal Radioulnar Joint: A pivot joint that shares the same articular capsule as the other two joints. It is located between the radial notch of the ulna and the head of the radius.

Elbow Ligaments

  • Ulnar Collateral Ligament: Composed of three bands:
    • Anterior Band: Attaches from the anterior epicondyle of the humerus to the medial margin of the coronoid process.
    • Posterior Band: Attaches from the posterior epicondyle of the humerus to the olecranon.
    • Inferior Band: Located between the coronoid process and the olecranon.
  • Radial Collateral Ligament: Connects to the lateral epicondyle of the humerus and blends with the annular ligament inferiorly.
  • Annular Ligament: Encircles the head of the radius, attaching to the anterior and posterior margins of the radial notch of the ulna.

Elbow Movements

  • The elbow joint primarily allows for flexion and extension movements.
