Legal Requirements for Registration
- Employers are not legally required to register with the labor office
- Employers must notify social insurance within two weeks of hiring an employee (Form S1)
- Inspectors can initiate legal action for non-compliance, including shutting down businesses or halting operations if there's imminent danger to worker safety.
- Inspections are annual and priority is given to establishments employing over 50 people or high-risk businesses.
- Inspectors can inspect registered and unregistered (informal) businesses, imposing penalties for non-compliance.
- Information on the existence and details of establishments is collected by inspectors and shared with social insurance.
- Social Insurance creates profiles of establishments with details like employee numbers and insurance contributions.
Legal Information and Compliance Requirements
- Minimum wage increased to 3000 EGP in July 2023 (3000 EGP) (pending future changes to 4000 EGP.)
- Employees get 21 days of annual leave after 6 months of employment, or 30 days after 10 years of service or age 50.
- Female employees have 90 days of maternity leave every 10 months, with hourly breaks for nursing.
- Employees are entitled to a minimum of 24 hours of weekly paid leave unless combined leave is required. Maximum continuous work without leave is two months.
- Employees are entitled to leave for national holidays, with a maximum of 13 days.
- Working hours should not exceed 48 hours a week, 8 hours a day.
- Employees are entitled to a one-hour minimum break/lunch break, scheduled to start after five hours of work.
- Minors (14-18 years) can work no more than 6 hours a day, including a minimum one-hour break. No more than 4 consecutive hours of work are allowed. They can't work on weekends or holidays.
- Minors have restrictions on work times and cannot work overtime. Employers must issue a 16+ year-old worker with a card confirming employment. Parental consent is required for 16-year-olds.
- Employing minors is not legally required to be reported to local labor offices.
