A lighter-weight alternative to leather duty gear, officers can choose to wear.

Standard belt issue, often used with leather gear. Nylon web gear is not worn with this.

Holsters approved by the Chief Firearms Officer that meet departmental compliance standards and are fit for specific firearms.

An approved expandable baton may be carried by officers after completing specialized training. The department issues the Rapid Containment Baton (RCB) in 26 or 29-inch lengths when fully expanded.

Officers previously trained with and issued the Monadnock MX baton may continue to carry it, provided they meet current training requirements. It expands to 18 to 24 inches.

Officers previously trained and issued the Auto Lock baton may continue to carry it, provided they meet current training requirements. It expands to 21 to 26 inches.

Officers are authorized to carry a straight baton that is 26 or 29 inches long. Riot/crowd control batons are 36 inches long.

Straight batons must be made of hardwood, with no ornamentation except for the officer's name/badge number and a rubber grommet. They must resemble the standard issue baton in length, diameter, composition, and appearance.

Officers must use an issued or authorized holder or ring when carrying a baton.

Devices like saps, sap gloves, carbon fiber knuckle gloves, brass knuckles, Billy clubs, ornate batons, yawara sticks, iron claws, shirkins, ropes, and non-department issued leg restraints are not authorized for carry or use.

Officers must successfully complete training before carrying approved expandable or straight batons.

Recruits must report any contact with law enforcement officers, even during off-duty hours, such as traffic stops. This includes both initiated and received contact.

Recruits are generally prohibited from holding any off-duty employment, including paid work. Volunteer work is allowed but strongly discouraged.

Recruits are only allowed access to police facilities for training purposes or with specific authorization from supervisors.

Recruits are not allowed to participate in ride-alongs with officers during the academy, unless it is a part of their training program.

Recruits need to be mindful of their social media posts, as they can be used in legal proceedings.

Recruits must get prior approval from the Chief of Police before using official Department materials for any purpose, including training, publications, or personal use.

The Peace Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) board is the state agency responsible for setting the academic and skill standards for all police officers in Colorado.

The Denver Police Academy encompasses four key areas of training that all recruits must complete.

A work uniform worn by officers, consisting of specific components like a regulation basic shirt, trousers or breeches, a jacket, and authorized awards and pins. Officers have discretion to wear a lightweight or heavy field jacket.

Officers wearing a Class B uniform with an outer ballistic vest can wear a designated dark navy blue shirt underneath. This shirt must be a specific brand, model, and color and must be worn with a ballistic vest.

Officers may wear items like an American Flag Bar, awards and medals, a CIT pin, a Citizens Appreciate Police pin, a Field Instructor/CRO plate, and other approved pins. These must be displayed in specific placements on the uniform.

The American Flag Bar is optional and can be worn centered ¼ inch above the top of the right pocket flap or ¼ inch above other authorized awards and pins. It can be a bit above other pins.

The Critical Incident Training pin can be positioned centered, ¼ inch above the top right pocket flap or parallel and ½ inch to the left of the Unit Designation pin.

The Citizens Appreciate Police pin is optional and is placed ½ inch below the top of the left pocket flap, ¼ inch below the Field Instructor/CRO pin if both are worn. It is near the bottom of the left pocket flap.

A mandatory identification plate for field instructors, centered and in line with the top of the left pocket of the uniform shirt, and optional on the jacket.

A Police Training Officer with ten or more years of cumulative service in this position may wear a gold colored field instructor pin. This shows their experience in training.

Officers should exercise prudent judgment when deciding if a repaired uniform item is still presentable. Visible repairs that detract from an officer's appearance are prohibited.

Any uniform that is clearly damaged or worn out cannot be worn by officers.

If an officer is unsure if a particular article of clothing is suitable for duty, supervisors or Internal Affairs personnel can determine its propriety.

Officers are prohibited from wearing any clothing with language or symbols that could be interpreted as political or controversial while on duty.

Officers must ensure their hair is clean, well-groomed, and styled in a way that doesn't interfere with their duties. Hair length shouldn't hamper wearing headgear.

Hair must be styled so it's not visible beyond the shirt collar when standing at attention. Long hair (including braids, dreadlocks, ponytails, or French braids) needs to be secured at the back of the head.

Hair can cover the upper part of the ear, but not more than half when the cap is worn.

Dyed, tinted, or bleached hair must be within a natural hair color range. Artificial colors like pink, blue, or purple are not allowed.

When a police officer loses or has their equipment stolen, a General Occurrence (GO) report must be filed, notifying the Intelligence Unit for tracking purposes.

The officer completes a GO report, marking 'HINTEL' in 'routing' to notify the Intelligence Unit and the appropriate investigative unit.

The officer must present the GO case number to Uniform Supply before requesting replacement items for lost or stolen equipment.

Immediately contact the Identification Unit and supervisor, and file a GO report. The ID card will be deactivated.

The officer must present the GO report number to the Identification Unit before a new ID card will be issued.

Contact on-duty DPD officers to file a lost/stolen GO report as a career service employee cannot directly file one.

For a lost/stolen GO report, the 'HINTEL' handle is added and 'N' (notify) selected for the Intelligence Unit and proper investigation.

When using a desktop RMS, the routing screen appears when the report is saved. Add 'HINTEL' and 'N' (notify) to route it.
