Study Notes
Faculty Vision and Mission
- The faculty aspires to be a recognized educational institution, regionally and internationally, by providing advanced educational programs, innovative applied research, and sustainable community development.
- The mission is to prepare knowledgeable and well-trained dentists committed to human values and professional ethics, by developing advanced educational programs corresponding to the actual needs of the local and global labor markets. The faculty also prepares applied research in line with national strategies and provides sustainable community service following international quality standards.
Anatomical Landmarks for Denture Construction
- Anatomical guides help in denture construction.
- These are either bony or soft tissue landmarks.
- Bony landmarks can be difficult to palpate, some are easy to palpate. Positions are fixed. Measurements can be accurately duplicated.
- Soft tissue landmarks are easy to identify, but positions change based on mobility.
Extra-oral Anatomical Landmarks
- Vermillion border: The transitional epithelium between the lip's mucous membrane and skin. The amount shown on the lips depends on the orbicularis oris muscle, labial alveolar bone, and anterior tooth alignment. Loss of teeth leads to a reduced vermillion border and alveolar bone resorption.
- Philtrum of the lip: A diamond-shaped depression at the center of the upper lip and base of the nose. Loss of teeth and labial alveolar bone can flatten the philtrum.
- Nasolabial sulcus: A depression that extends laterally and downwards from the ala of the nose. With aging and tooth loss, the sulcus becomes more prominent and loss of vertical dimension. Plumper denture flanges can improve the condition but may interfere with muscular function
- Mentolabial sulcus: A horizontal depression between the lower lip and the chin. Its curvature indicates the maxillary/mandibular relationship and the degree of overclosure.
- Ala-tragus line (Camper's line): The imaginary line extending from the superior border of the tragus of the ear to the inferior border of the ala of the nose. The line is used to establish the posterior occlusal plane of the artificial teeth.
- Inter-pupillary line (Supra-orbital ridge and eye pupil): The imaginary line joining the pupils of the eyes.. It is used to establish the anterior occlusal plane of the artificial teeth.
- Angle of the mouth and outer canthus of the eye: The distance from the outer canthus of the eye to the angle of the mouth. This distance was used to determine the vertical dimension of the patient at rest.
Modiolus:
- Located at the meeting point of the buccinator and other facial muscles distal to the angle of the mouth.
- With tooth loss, the modiolus drops; this can be improved by properly positioning the maxillary teeth.
