Study Notes
Cusps
- The sharp end of a tooth responsible for cutting food before grinding
- Cusps are named based on their location (e.g., lingual cusp, buccal cusp)
- Triangular ridges are formed on the slopes of each side of a cusp ridge, named after the cusps they belong to (e.g., triangular ridge of the buccal cusp)
Ridges
- Transverse ridge: formed when a buccal and lingual triangular ridge join, creating a large elevation that starts on one cusp and ends on the opposite cusp
- Cusp ridge: found on anterior and posterior teeth; originates on the cusp tip and extends down to the mesial and distal side, located in the deepest part of developmental grooves
Line Angles
- A junction of two tooth surfaces, named after the two surfaces it combines
- Anterior teeth have nine line angles, while posterior teeth have eight line angles
