Study Notes

Creative Design Solutions: Design Thinking

  • Design Thinking is a methodology used by designers to solve complex problems and find solutions for clients.
  • Designers use a cyclical process of empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test.
  • Create: Turning new ideas into reality; making connections and problem-solving.
  • Innovate: Doing something new ways; developing new methods of accomplishing something.
  • Key question presented: How do we create and innovate with design solutions?

The Design Thinking Process

  • Empathize: Understanding people within the context of the design challenge. This involves observing, engaging, watching, and listening to gather information about user needs and concerns. The goal is to identify the users' needs and feelings
  • Define: Bringing clarity and focus into the design discussion. This involves making sense of the extensive information gathered, narrowing down the problem to focus on the most significant areas, and creating a statement of the problem and solution statement.
  • Ideate: Generating a variety of ideas, going beyond obvious solutions, including brainstorming and sketching to interact with ideas. The goal is to generate as many ideas as possible, pushing for the widest possible range.
  • Prototype: Building and testing simple models or representations of the proposed solution to gather feedback and refine the solution.
  • Test: Gathering feedback on the prototypes, asking users "why," learning from failures, and identifying potential improvements for the solution to refine.

Empathy vs. Sympathy

  • Empathy: Experiencing someone else's situation, and understanding their feelings, needs.
  • Sympathy: Sharing someone's sadness or pain, without fully understanding their situation. For example: You feel empathy if your pet dies, you send a sympathy note when someone's pet dies.

Define Mode

  • Defining the problem within the design process brings clarity and focus to the conversation surrounding the design challenges.
  • This step involves analyzing and synthesizing gathered information to understand user needs and translate widespread information into a comprehensive problem statement.

Ideate Mode

  • Ideation is the process of coming up with a diversity of ideas from which, and/or testing solutions
  • This involves brainstorming, creative thinking, and creating a range of concepts, to go beyond obvious solutions.
  • It is about generating an array of possibilities from which a viable solution will be derived.

Prototype Mode

  • Creating prototypes is a means of testing concepts and solutions.
  • These are representations of the proposed solution, to test possibilities to gain feedback and refine solutions.
  • Quickly building and testing, not necessarily pretty products, but products that illustrate ideas.

Test Mode

  • Asking users about their responses to the prototypes helps to ascertain potential improvements, solutions, and refine the proposed solution.
  • Testing is about getting feedback from users through interactions with the prototypes.
  • Identifying what aspects worked and what failed to provide valuable insights for enhancement.

Iteration

  • Iteration is a continuous feedback loop of improvements, that results in better performance of the outcome.
  • It involves changing or refining the design based on feedback received from the testing phase to further enhance and refine the solution.

Assignment

  • What are the steps followed in Design Thinking? Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, Test.
  • In your own words, describe each step and their importance in developing successful design solutions. (See detailed information on each step above)
