Study Notes
Conduction System
- The depolarization wave is initiated by the sinoatrial (SA) node.
- The wave then passes through the atrial myocardium.
- The depolarization wave then spreads to the atrioventricular (AV) node, causing the atria to contract.
- The wave rapidly passes through the AV bundle.
- The wave then continues on through the right and left bundle branches, and then to the Purkinje fibers in the ventricular walls, resulting in a contraction that ejects blood.
Cardiac Cycle
- The cardiac cycle refers to the events of one complete heartbeat, during which both atria and ventricles contract and then relax.
- Systole refers to heart contraction.
- Diastole refers to heart relaxation.
- The first heart sound, “lub”, is caused by the closing of the AV valves.
- The second heart sound, “dub”, occurs when the semilunar valves close at the end of systole.
ECG
- P wave: atria depolarize
- QRS complex: ventricles depolarize
- T wave: end of electrical activity in ventricles; repolarization of ventricular muscles
Heart Problems
Coronary Artery Disease
- Plaque buildup in the walls of the arteries may lead to a heart attack.
Heart Rhythm Problem
- Abnormal heart rhythm, including heartbeat that is too fast, too slow, or irregular.
Heart Valve Disease
- Degeneration of the aortic valve.
Heart Failure
- The heart fails to pump efficiently.
Cardiac Arrest
- The heart stops beating due to a malfunction.
