Chapter 6: Input and Output
- Computers receive input, process information, and produce output.
- Input devices receive data, processor (CPU) processes information, and output devices deliver results.
Key Input Devices
-
Keyboard: used to input letters, numbers, and symbols.
- Standard alphanumeric keys
- Numeric keypad
- Function keys
- Directional keys and special keys
- Can be wireless, portable or foldable
- Some handheld PCs and mobile devices have a built-in keyboard or a thumb pad.
-
Pointing devices: move an onscreen pointer to select objects (or perform other actions).
- Mouse: common pointing device.
- Rests on flat surface
- Older mechanical mice have a ball
- Most modern mice are optical
- Can be wireless
- Common mouse operations: click, right-click, double click, drag-and-drop, scroll wheel/button
- Electronic pen: used for drawing or writing on a screen (often on pen-based PCs)
- Function similar to a mouse but can also be used to draw and write
- Touch screen: input device that is touched with the finger to issue commands or otherwise generate input to connected computer.
- Mouse: common pointing device.
-
Scanner: optically scans images, text, handwriting , or objects, and converts them to a digital image; used in source data automation.
- Types of scanners: flatbed, sheet-fed, handheld, drum, three-dimensional
- Quality measured in dots per inch (dpi), higher resolution images are sharper.
-
Readers (Different types): devices that read barcodes, machine-readable codes represented as bars
- Barcode readers: read barcodes.
- Common types: Universal Product Code (UPC), Code 39, POSTNET Code, RFID: technology for storing and transmitting data.
- RFID tags contain tiny chips and antennas; used for tracking inventory, livestock, or other large assets.
- Optical mark readers (OMRs): input data from special forms, used for exams, polls, questionnaires.
- Optical character recognition (OCR): read optical characters, especially suited for turnaround documents (e.g., monthly bills).
- Magnetic ink character recognition (MICR) readers: read special magnetic characters, primarily used for processing checks.
-
Biometric readers: use unique physical characteristics (fingerprint, face, iris recognition, voice and signature) for security and access control.
-
They often combine with other hardware devices such as keyboards or mice. They are increasingly popular for access control in computers and other storage devices.
-
Digital camera: take and records pictures and videos
-
Audio input: entering audio data into the computer (voice and music)
- Voice input systems: enable computers to recognize human voice (e.g., microphone or headset software combination).
- Music systems can input music.
-
Other input devices: web camera, bar code reader, microphone, digital camera, light pen.
Output Devices: Display
- Display device that presents information from the CPU.
- Common types: CRT, LCD, Plasma, LED, OLED.
- Screen resolution: number of horizontal and vertical pixels.
- Aspect ratio: width-to-height ratio commonly 4:3(traditional) or 16:9(widescreen).
- Various resolutions, such as VGA (640x480), SVGA (800x600), XGA (1024x768).
Output Devices: Printers
-
Printer: output device that produces hard copy output.
- Types: impact printers (such as dot-matrix printers – often still used) and non-impact printers (such as inkjet or laser printers).
-
Print resolution (dpi): measurement of quality. Higher (more dots per inch) better quality.
-
Print speed (ppm): measured in pages per minute shows how fast they print. Common speeds vary widely.
-
Some printers are now multi-function (or all-in-ones) encompassing capabilities such as copying, scanning, faxing and/or printing.
-
Other output devices: speakers, headphones, plotters
Installing Peripheral Devices
- Peripheral devices connect to the computer.
- Data transmission: Data flows between the device and computer over a circuit called a data bus.
