Common Beer Glasses
- Pint Glasses: The most common type of beer glass in the US, used in bars and restaurants.
- Beer Mugs: Used in England, Germany, and the US, they are robust, easy to use, and come in different sizes.
- Beer Steins: Similar to mugs but have a hinged lid and a lever for easy opening. Made of a variety of materials, including porcelain, stoneware, pewter, silver, and wood.
- Goblets & Chalices: These are a larger, more extravagant type of beer glass, available in various sizes.
- Pilsner Glasses: Tall and thin with minimal curvature, designed for lighter beers like Pilsners. Allows drinkers to appreciate the beer’s color and carbonation.
- Weizen Glasses: Similar to pilsner glasses, but have more curvature, especially at the top. Used for Weizen beers.
Types of Beer
-
Lager: Bottom-fermented beer with a thinner body and dry, subtle flavors.
- Light Beers: Variants of American lager, with fewer calories and less alcohol.
- Pilsner: Pale beer named after the village of Pilsen in the Czech Republic.
- Malt Liquors: Lager beers with a higher alcohol content (5.5 to 6 percent or more).
- Bock Beers: Strong, dark lagers with a high alcohol content and full, malty, sweet flavor. Originated in Germany.
-
Ale: Top-fermented beer with a characteristic fruity flavor.
- Witbier: Belgian white beer made with wheat and cane sugar.
- Weizen or Weissbier: German "white beer" that is pale, highly carbonated, and intended to be drunk fresh.
- Pale Ale: Bitterness is a defining characteristic, not just a description. Translucent, not light in color.
- Barleywine: Thick, rich, and strong ale with an alcohol content of 8 to 12 percent.
- Porter: Dark, bittersweet brew that originated in the 18th century and was popular with porters in London.
- Stout: A "stouter" porter, with a fuller flavor and creamy texture. Dark brown to almost black in color.
Pouring Beer
- Clean Glass: Use a clean glass to prevent oil, dirt, or residuals from affecting the head and flavor of the beer.
- 45° Angle: Hold the glass at a 45° angle and pour the beer in the middle of the slope, adding some air between the bottle and glass.
- 90° Angle: At the halfway point bring the glass to a 90° angle and continue pouring to induce a good foam head. An ideal head should be 1" to 1-1/2".
- Yeast: Bottled conditioned beers may contain a considerable amount of yeast which can affect clearness and taste. Some brewers consider this a desirable characteristic.
