Public Complaints

  • Definitions: Any deficiency in services/amenities or inconvenience to passengers results in lodging a complaint.
  • General causes for complaints: Theft of passenger luggage, entry of unauthorized passengers, delay in train running, damaged luggage/parcels, poor cleanliness in trains/stations, dirty bedrolls, claim settlements, corruption in catering services, rude/discourteous commercial staff, inadequate water facilities, improper electrical equipment functioning, incorrect information/guidance to customers, inadequacy of amenities to customers, accidents/improper disaster management in case of accidents, overcharging of customers, failure to attend enquiry office phones, over-carriage of parcels/luggage, passengers travelling in the wrong coach.
  • Disposal of complaints: If a complaint regarding water/fan non-functioning is received, the concerned employee should be informed immediately. Passengers traveling in the wrong coach should be asked to leave. If reserved accommodation is unavailable, assistance should be provided. Railways employees should handle complaints appropriately.

Modes of Lodging Complaints

  • Complaint and suggestions books are available at stations, guards, conductors, and reservation offices.
  • Complaint should include complainant's details, reason, and signature.
  • Complaints should be disposed of immediately.
  • Complaints can be lodged through IRCMS (Indian Railway Complaint Management System), the customer care website, or by contacting customer care number 139.
  • Other methods for lodging complaints include complaint books, verbally, through post, SMS, email, telephone, Twitter, assistance booths, CPGRAMS, direct contact with officers, complaint cell, public representative, and public committees.
