Study Notes

Problem-Solving Strategies

  • To achieve a common goal, employees from different departments can brainstorm a list of ideas in response to the question, "How can we work together to achieve our common goal?"
  • Each participant should write down five ideas on how they can individually contribute to the achievement of the common goal.

Good Ideas Activity

  • Objective: To come up with ideas for inter-team and inter-departmental collaboration for achieving common goals to correct organization problems.
  • Time: 20 minutes
  • Materials: Flipchart, felt-tipped pens, timer, and whistle
  • Instructions:
    • Specify a common goal that requires collaboration among different functions.
    • Brainstorm a list of ideas in response to the question, "How can I (or my function) help to achieve this goal?"
    • Produce a long list and shrink it down to the top five ideas.
    • Announce a suitable time limit and blow a whistle to get participants' attention before the end of the allotted time.

Steps to Complete an Action Plan

  • Step 6: Make certain all actions defined are completed as planned.
  • Step 7: Follow-up plan - What actions will be completed in the future to ensure the root cause has been eliminated?
  • Step 8: Validate and Celebrate - What were the results of the follow-up?

Root Cause Analysis (RCA)

  • RCA doesn't come with instant results, but getting to the root cause of a problem solves it for good.
  • The goal of problem-solving is to overcome obstacles and find a solution that best resolves an issue.
  • Implementation of a solution requires planning and execution, with a focus on short implementation cycles with testing and feedback.

Identifying the Team

  • A problem cannot be solved thoroughly by an individual, so use a team!
  • The team should consist of SMEs or experts with a high degree of knowledge and authority to correct the problem.
  • The team should be a small group of people (4-10) with process and product knowledge, available time, and authority to correct the problem.
  • A designated Champion should oversee the problem until it is resolved.
