Study Notes
Lecture to Replace Exam #1
- Cognitive Behavioral Theory: Aims to teach people beyond 12 behavior changes to reduce recidivism (re-offending)
- Choice Model: People's decisions are driven by weighing the costs and benefits of a crime.
- National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) and Uniform Crime Reports (UCR): NCVS is problematic because it focuses on large, urban police departments which often have more funding, leading to a biased view of crime. UCR is strongly biased.
- UCR includes 8 types of crime: homicide, arson, burglary, robbery, forcible rape, aggravated assault, larceny/theft, motor vehicle theft.
- Big offenses are not necessarily easily removed from the criminal justice system (e.g. police tracking).
Guest Lecture 1: The Intersection of Policing and Communication
- Police have discretion in their interactions
- Communication Accommodation Theory: Interactions modify their communication to convey their attitudes.
- People who believe they are treated fairly by the police have more positive views despite the outcome of an interaction.
Guest Lecture 2: The Intersection of Policing and Communication (What Happens When...)
- Communication Accommodation Theory: people modify how they communicate to convey attitudes to each other
- Random patrol does not reduce crime, it happens over time and distance.
- Police are hired and fired regularly
- 8 phases of a criminal case, including: observation, investigation, arrest/citation, report, decision to file with DA, prosecution and a return to investigation or completion (dismissed or trial).
The Rules Change
- Student-athletes are strictly governed by the NCAA (before July 2021), aiming to maintain amateur status(no gifts/payments allowed).
- Reggie Bush: Best college football player in 2005, Heisman Trophy winner. He was later charged by the NCAA for receiving gifts (2010), this resulted in him returning the trophy and erasing his legacy in USC history, the trust returned his trophy back and restored his records.
- Laws change depending on which state for certain issues, such as marijuana.
Framing Theory, Selection, Salience
- Framing Theory: focuses on who is doing the framing (and why). words used to describe an issue
- Selection: identification of specific words and terms, like "student-athlete", "felon" or "convict"
- Salience: how often these words and terms are being used within a conversation or issue.
